Garfield County Sewing Works (UWBB Project)

GarCo Sewing Works is a design and training center in downtown Rifle, CO. GarCo Sewing Works utilizes volunteers needing job training and transferable business skills. Working with families referred from the Department of Human Services, mostly single mothers on TANF, Colorado Mountain College and Garfield County are partnering to provide training that leads to self sufficiency. Our service area is located on the Western Slope of Colorado, about a three-hour drive west from Denver (180 miles) and about a 1.5-hour drive east (88 miles) from Grand Junction. Our area boasts scenic rivers and other four-season tourist attractions, especially our many festivals, mountain trails, ski resorts, and hot springs. Our local communities experience significant levels of poverty due to a large number of low-paying, tourist- and ranching-related service jobs and our rural, low-population geographic area. Population is centered around towns ranging from trendy Aspen in the southeast to remote Parachute out west.) We also work with a high number of Hispanic residents, so bilingual skills are a plus. The UWBB VISTA Project will offer $200/month housing stipends (paid directly to VISTA members' landlords). Our VISTA cohort will include at least 12 positions. We periodically will work together as a team on poverty-related community projects. The VISTA Communications Coordinator will work closely with staff at GarCo Sewing Works, helping to develop a career pathway procedure and curriculum for current participants. The VISTA member will also document GarCo Sewing Works activities and classes through social media (Facebook and website). Finally, the VISTA member will support the staff with fundraising activities and promotional events.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
